Things are only impossible until somebody does what another believes can’t be done.

I am thankful to all those who said no to me. It’s because of them I did it myself.

Goals: A Systematic Way to Determine Excellence
A conversation on setting goals with Matt Audibert, corporate trainer at Atlas Charity.
“I was five or six years old, I really wanted a video game for Nintendo 64, so I told my dad. He said he would buy it, but he could not just give it to me until I had the yard work done. I was determined to rake these leaves as best as possible. When I got done, that porch had never looked better. Needless to say, I got my N64 game.”
Matt Audibert, a corporate trainer at Atlas Charity shares this story as a fundamental part of his foundation for establishing goals. Goal setting has become a key part of his success and will play a vital role in his future with Atlas Charity. Currently, he is working towards team development so he can win a trip to the New Orleans Saints football game.
Setting goals is not just making a hopeful prediction for the future, the most effective way to set goals is through the SMART goals system. SMART goals are Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic, and Timely. Audibert prefers to change the “r” to revisable. When probed as to why changing this part, he says, “One of my favorite quotes is by Will Smith where he states ‘realistic is he most traveled road to mediocrity’.”
Currently, one of Audibert’s goals is to help expand the organization by spreading out five more offices by December 26, 2013, along with sailing around the world, and season tickets to the Saints games every year. However, this goal is not the vision which keeps him going day in and day out. Daily, Audibert visions his desire to buy his mom her favorite car. He has pictured each and every moment of the day in which he buys her this car and uses this situation fuel each day.
A key to leadership is learning to motivate others. A good leader will discover what motivates his team members, and help them achieve their goals while producing results for the company.
Whatever your goal may be in life, make it the only thing you see. And, then work hard every day. And never give up. Never.

One-On-Ones: Benefits from Teaching and Learning
Walk into Atlas Charity’s office after hours and you will probably find each room occupied with two people carrying on conversations ranging from training others and recruiting to positive attitude to even tying a great tie. What is it you have found? You just walked into a one-on-one. This is a time where team members and leaders can have scheduled, structured conversations to teach, learn, and grow. It is also important to enhance professional relationships in the workplace. Stephen Covey is one of the many successful leaders who helped develop the principles to which Atlas has derived the importance of one-on-ones. In reference to professional relationship building he states:
“A cardinal principle of total quality escapes too many managers: you cannot continuously improve interdependent systems and processes until you progressively perfect interdependent, interpersonal relationships.”
At Atlas Charity, the minimum requirement is 2 per week. There should be three different kind of one-on-ones: learn, teach and accountability. One good way to look at one-on-ones is as a competition. During the week, every day is a point; for example, if a one-on-one is conducted on Monday, Thursday, Friday, and Saturday that is four points. The lack of a one-on-one on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Sunday would deduct three points. This places the week at one point. This makes it a positive week. Each week the goal should be to have a positive result at the end.
“It’s better to hang out with people better than you…pick out associates whose behavior is better than yours and you’ll drift in that direction,” said the phenomenally successful Warren Buffett. Learning and growing from others along with finding someone to be accountable to can be essential to professional development. In a business model such as Atlas Charity’s, leadership growth is essential. Kai Petrich, Director and owner of Atlas Charity, has been able to achieve a lot of personal and professional growth from one-on-ones. His favorite one-on-one helped teach him how to have better time management through the use of a planner.
Just as the great minds of old such as Socrates and Plato found sharing of information beneficial, one-on-ones can be a great way to foster relationships, develop effective leadership skills, and turn weakness into strength.

Thank You - Action Against Hunger
Proud to have received another thank-you note from Action Against Hunger on behalf of our fundraising efforts. In the letter, we were given some updates on recent developments from Action Against Hunger.
"In 2011, we helped some 6 million people in desperate need, including over 850,000 in East Africa, where a once-in-a-generation drought caused the United Nations to declare famine conditions. We were one of the only organizations working on the ground in Somalia, where conditions were worst due to a combination of extreme drought and political instability."
